Hey! ‘La liga’ is one of the best football leagues around the world. We all know a lot about the last years of the competition, the current best teams… But maybe you don’t know La Liga’s history… Today we will get to know it!
The first to be known is that the first Spanish League edition took place in the season 1928-29, so it was 85 years ago. Do you know who the first champion was? Barcelona. And the last? Barça too! However, it is not the team with more titles… But let’s go step by step.
La Liga officially began in the early 20s, but some years before a similar trophy had taken place: Spanish Championship. The participants of the first La Liga edition were the winners of the Spanish Championships tournaments played before. In the first years of La Liga just 10 teams played it.
When it had been less than 10 years of the first La Liga edition, the competition was suspended because of the Spanish Civil War. La Liga began to be played again in season 1939-40.
S.XX: 2nd half
Until the middle of the 80s La Liga was a static tournament: every year played the same number of teams and the competition’s plan was the same. At that time, the club who dominated the Spanish League was Real Madrid. ‘Los Blancos’ won many of that year’s titles. In 1984 was created the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP), the association to manage La Liga. They modernized the competition and extended the number of teams to 20.
90s and present
From the 90s, advertising brands and media invaded football and La Liga, what brought Spanish teams to earn a lot of money. Real Madrid wasn’t the only team who dominated La Liga: Valencia, Atletico Madrid… And still more Barcelona became very important. Nowadays La Liga is becoming a two-horse-race competition, in which there are two big teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, who dominate and win every year the trophies.
What will happen in the next years?
