During a lot of years it was said that the Spanish Cup was a minor title, but this has changed in the last years. Two seasons ago Barça and Real Madrid played the final, last year Barcelona played it again but against Athletic Bilbao and this season will be the turn of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. What a match, what a final!

Both Real and Atletico are really keen to win this trophy, more interested tan other times. Atletico want to shut up those who say that they always lose when they play in front of Real (they aren’t wrong). On the other hand, Real Madrid ‘need’ to achieve a title after not succeeding in this year’s main aim: winning their 10th Champions League.

Through the years there have been various Spanish Cup finals played between the two strongest teams of the city of Madrid. However, there have been a lot years since the last time in season 1991-91. That day Atletico defeated Real by 2-0 at the Bernabeu. It would be a dream for ‘los colchoneros’ to repeat this score; also a nightmare for ‘los blancos’…

We don’t know what’s going on in the Copa del Rey final. We just know that it will be a spectacular match, with a lot of goals and played in a perfect stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu.

Final de la Copa del Rey: Real Madrid – Atlético de Madrid

Ahora sí, se acerca la final de la Copa del Rey, y con ella, el derby madrileño entre Real Madrid y Atlético de Madrid en el Bernabéu. Hace años se decía que la copa estaba infravalorada, pero lo cierto es que en las últimas temporadas se han jugado finales de lujo. Y este año no es para menos. Vaya partidazo y vaya final que tenemos por delante.

Las ganas de ambos equipos por hacerse con la copa son máximas. Por una parte el Atlético de Madrid quiere hacer callar de una vez las bocas –a las que no falta razón- que dicen que cuando juega con el Madrid ‘siempre pierde’; y los de Mourinho quieren ganar para llevarse algún título este año después de haber perdido la liga ya desde hace meses y de que otro año más se les haya atragantado la tan ansiada ‘décima’.

De finales de la Copa del Rey entre Atlético de Madrid y Real Madrid hay precedentes, pero quedan ya muy lejanos. La última final entre ambos equipos fue en la temporada 1991-92 y también se jugó en el Bernabéu. Aquel día el Atlético rompió con el tópico y venció a su gran rival por 2 a 0. ¿Qué pasará este año?

Queda ya muy poco para la final. Queda ya muy poco para ver una espectáculo de fútbol, goles y rivalidad en estado puro. ¿De verdad te lo vas a perder?

The best derbies of La Liga

When we talk about La Liga, we think in the ‘Clasicos’ between Barça and Real Madrid. Those clashes are the most special of the competition, but not the unique. La Liga is much more.

The big rival of Real is Barça, the same as the worst enemy for Madrid is Barcelona. However, the two teams have strong opponents at their homes: Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.

Let’s start talking about the Catalan teams. The rivalry between both clubs is directly linked to their history: Barça was founded in 1899 and Espanyol the following year. The two clubs became the best teams in Barcelona and the whole Catalonia, so they began to fight ‘face to face’ to be better than the other. As a result the ‘Catalan derby’ became very popular, something that continue nowadays.

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Atletico is similar to Espanyol and Barça. Already in the firsts years of the past century the city of Madrid became excited when the two teams faced each other. It has not changed today. The derbies between Atletico and Real Madrid are very intensive, with a lot of goals and very enjoyed by fans.

Grandes derbis de la liga española

Cuando se habla de la liga española a todos nos vienen a la cabeza los ‘Clásicos’ entre Barça y Madrid. Y es que estos son los partidos más especiales, pero no los únicos. La Liga es mucho más.

El gran rival del Barça es el Real Madrid, igual que el gran enemigo del Madrid es el Barcelona. Pero ambos equipos tienen dos duros adversarios en casa: Espanyol y Atlético de Madrid.

Empecemos por Barça y Espanyol. La rivalidad entre ambos equipos va directamente ligada a su historia: el equipo azulgrana fue fundado en 1899 y el blanquiazul solo un año después. Los dos se erigieron rápidamente como los grandes clubes de Barcelona y Cataluña, lo que llevó a sus aficiones a empezar a tener una fuerte rivalidad. El derbi barcelonés entre los dos equipos fue adquiriendo mucha fuerza, hasta el punto que hoy en día continua llenando estadios, moviliza a las aficiones y es seguido por todos los medios de comunicación.

La rivalidad entre Real Madrid y Atlético no tiene nada que envidiar a la de Espanyol y Barça. Ya desde principios del s.XX la capital española se paralizaba cuando ambos equipos, los mejores de Madrid, se enfrentaban. Hoy en día la cosa sigue igual. Partidos de alta intensidad, goles y color y lleno en las gradas es la fachada típica de un derbi madrileño.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia

This year’s Europa League speaks Spanish. Three of the four teams which are to play the semifinals also compete in La Liga so at least one of them will reach the final of one of the top football competitions in Europe.

Athletic Bilbao, Valencia and Atletico Madrid are the Spanish representatives in this year’s semifinals. Athletic Bilbao will fight against Sporting Lisboa to reach the final, and Atletico Madrid and Valencia will face each other in the other semifinal.

The first-leg of the semifinals between Atletico Madrid and Valencia will take place on Thursday 19th April at the Vicente Calderon. The two teams know how the other plays football since both are La Liga teams, but their high level and the importance of this match means that everything unpredictable.

The ‘Colchonores’ (Atletico players), led by their boss ‘Cholo’ Simeone, will try to achieve a good match at home and score goals because they know that the second-leg at Mestalla could be very hard one.

On the other hand, Unay Emery’s Valencia will play to their full potential in the Vicente Calderon match in order to play the second-leg at Mestalla in front of their fans without as much pressure. Moreover, Valencia are not playing as well as they would like in La Liga so they will try to succeed in the Champions League.
