The first phase of the Euro 2012 has already been played and we have been able to see which the strongest teams and best players are. Moreover, we have already had the first surprises of the competition: one of the favourite countries to win, the Netherlands, has been eliminated, and also the promising Russian team will not play the quarterfinals. However, Greece is the other surprise, because they have classified and they will play the next round.

These will be the quarterfinals matches:

Czech Republic vs Portugal (Thursday 21st)

Spain vs France (Saturday 23rd)

Germany vs Greece (Friday 22nd)

England vs Italy (Sunday 24th)

The winner of the match between the Czech and Portuguese teams will play the semifinals against the winner of the clash between the Germans and the Greeks; the other semifinal will be played by the winners of the Spain vs France match and the England vs Italy match.

Portugal, Spain and Germany seem to be the favourites to reach the semifinals of the Euro 2012. The other quarterfinals clash will be played by England and Italy, two European giants that have played better in previous years but that are both strong teams, so either of them could win.

However, in every Euro and World Cup there are teams that are unexpectedly eliminated and others that are not expected to pass but in the end they do,  so nothing is set in stone.

For example, in the 2006 World Cup in Germany a strong Spanish team faced a French team that appeared to be weaker in the last 16 round. Spain was the favourite but in the end France won and also reached the final of the World Cup. These kind of football competitions are unpredictable.

Will this ‘story’ be repeated this year or not?

The good stuff starts now: the quarterfinals are here!

The best football is back, “La Roja” is back, the Euro is back!

The best football of Europe returns this Friday: it’s time for the Euro 2012! Poland and Ukraine are the countries that are going to hold Europe’s most important football tournament played by national teams. It will last about one month: the opening match will be played by Poland and Greece this Wednesday and the final will take place on the 1st of June.

One of the favourite countries to win the competition is Spain, who already won the last Euro and World Cup. “La Roja” is one of the best teams in Europe so they are candidates to win but they are not in the same good conditions as they were two or four years ago (when they won the Euro’08 and the World Cup’10).

Spain have a lot of the players that won two years ago in South Africa in their squad, but also  some of their very important players are injured. One of them is David Villa, who has been injured for five months. It seemed that he was going to be ready for the Euro but in the end he will not play it. Spain loose for this tournament one of their best 9’s ever, but Negredo, Pedro and Torres will be the team’s defenders.

Carles Puyol is one of the other players that will not play the Euro in Poland and Ukraine. He has suddenly been injured so Spain loose one of their best defenders. However, Vicente del Bosque’s team have a lot of qualified players that will fight for the title, so once more Spain are one of the favourites to win the title.

Besides Spain, there are more countries with good chances of winning the Euro. One of them is Germany, the team that is always a candidate to win, and even more so this year because they have some young promising stars that could gain them this year’s title. Another candidate to win in Poland and Ukraine is Holland, who “need” to win a title to recover from their defeat in the last World Cup final against Spain. The other possible winners are be England, France or Italy.

All is ready! Enjoy the EURO 2012!
