Every year since 1991 the Formula One Spain GP takes place in the Circuit de Catalunya, in Barcelona. The circuit is located in the town of Montmeló, just 20 km away from the city of Barcelona (learn how to get to it here).
Catalonia has always been a place for motor and F1 fans, despite there not having been important Spanish drivers until Fernando Alonso arrived. Before the circuit of Montmeló, the Formula One Spain GP was held in the old Pedraldes and Montjuic circuits in Barcelona (Montjuic circuit was closed because of lack of safety). Some years after, the Circuit of Montmeló was opened.
The Circuit de Catalunya is one of the most liked by drivers: it is 4.627 meters long and has 16 turns. The circuit ends in a thrilling final straight. Up until today, the king of the circuit is Michael Schumacher, who has won 3 times in this GP. After the ‘Kaiser’ there is Miki Hakkinen, with 3 victories. The only Spanish driver who has achieved victory is Fernando Alonso in 2006, in front of the circuit’s grand stand full of his fans.
