This year, 7 out of 23 candidates to win the Ballon d’Or are Spanish: Casillas, Puyol, Cesc, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Iniesta and Villa. What do you know about them?

1.- Casillas (1981) plays as Real Madrid’s goalkeeper and captain. He was Best Goalkeeper in the World in 2008 and 2009, consecutively. People call him El Santo (The Saint) because some of his actions have magically saved his team.

2.- Puyol (1978) plays defense and captain at FC Barcelona. He was chosen as the best defense in the UEFA League 2006. People call him Tarzan because of his curly hairstyle.

3.- Cesc (1987) started at Barça, but now plays for Arsenal. He has been playing with the Spanish team since he was only 17: he’s the youngest player, with 57 games behind him. His real name is Francesc.

4.- Xavi (1980) plays as midfielder at FC Barcelona, and he is considered one of the best in the world. He started playing football at only 11 years old at La Masia. He hasn’t got a popular nickname.

5.- Xabi Alonso (1981) plays as midfielder at Real Madrid. Football runs in his family: his brother and father are football players too. People call him El Donostiarra (a reference to the Basque City where he was born).

6.- Iniesta ( 1984) is a midfielder at FC Barcelona and was the one who scored the goal that won the FIFA World Cup 2010. People call him Sweet Iniesta and he has  his own song.

7.- Villa ( 1981) is a scorer at FC Barcelona. He’s also the top scorer in Spanish Team history, and won the Silver Boot during the World Cup. People call him Villa Maravilla.

Which one is your personal favorite?
