Messi – Ronaldo: the silent battle

Messi – Ronaldo. Ronaldo – Messi. They are the two best players in the world, they play in the best league of the world and both are the leaders of the two best teams of that league –and probably the best of the world too-. Taking all of this into account, rivalry and comparisons are inevitable…

The two players are brilliant, both score a lot of goals and their fans love them. There are records that make evidence that they are the best. Two seasons ago Ronaldo became the first player ever to score 40 goals in La Liga… Something awesome… But Messi scored 50 last year! That would have seemed impossible some years ago. It’s clear that both Ronaldo and Messi are cracks.

In spite of this, there are some people (not few) that say that unless the two players are great, there is one that is better than the other. Maybe you are thinking in Messi… And you are not wrong! ‘La Pulga’ has won three consecutive Ballon d’Or, he is always shining in Barça and he scores almost every match. Ronaldo is also great, but for many people Messi is magical…

Ronaldo – Messi. Messi – Ronaldo. The fight between the two best players. The silent battle. And who is the best for you?

Messi – Ronaldo. Ronaldo – Messi.

Ronaldo – Messi. Messi – Ronaldo. La lucha entre los dos mejores. La batalla silenciosa. ¿Y tú, con cuál te quedarías?

Is Messi the best football player ever?

In the second-leg match of the Champions League round of 16 between Barça and Bayer Leverkusen Leo Messi became the first player of the competition to score five goals in a match. Some people already said before this achievement that Messi is the  best player ever, but after the ‘repoker’ of goals he scored last week, the debate over whether he is the best or not has reached its high point.

The question is: Why could Messi be the best player in history?

Leo is just 24 and he has scored 228 goals in 311 games for Barcelona; and this season, he has scored 53 in just 49 games (for both his team and his country). Moreover, he has scored 17 hat-tricks for the Catalan club, and one for Argentina. And he has equaled the record for most goals in a Champions League season, 12, held by himself and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Messi has won 3 Champions Leagues with Barcelona, something that very few players achieve, in addition to 5 Spanish leagues, 2 Club World Cups, 1 Spanish Cup and other titles. And individually, Leo has achieved 3 consecutive Ballons d’Or. The only thing that the ‘Messiah’ hasn’t  succeeded in yet is winning with his country, Argentina’s national team, and some people think that he should do this in order to become the best player in history.

Who competes with Messi as the best player ever??

Maradona: World Cup winner with Argentina in 86, in which he scored one of the best goals ever. He helped Italian team Napoli to reach the top, and always played magical football. However, he disappointed many people with his addiction to drugs.

Pelé: 1283 goals, the rest of the players are far behind him in number of goals scored. He won 3 World Cups, he is the most memorable player of old football.

Di Stefano: he played both for Argentina and Spain. Natural goal scorer and Real Madrid star, he won 5 World Cups with the Spanish club.

Cruyff: star of Ajax, he helped Barça to reach the top when the Catalans weren’t as big a club as they are nowadays. 3 times winner of the Ballon d’Or, he will always be remembered for his dribbling move.

And… ¿Do you think Messi already is or will be the best player in history?

THE LAST OBSTACLE FOR REAL MADRID: FC BARCELONA

Two years ago Florentino Pérez became the president of Real Madrid. Then Pérez signed Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema. One year later, Mourinho became the coach. And in the middle of last season the team started to play well and get good results.

So, why is Real Madrid not winning many titles?

If a team has a good coach, great players, plays well and scores goals but has not won important titles, there is only one explanation: other teams play better football. In this case FC Barcelona played better than Real Madrid and now that the Merengue Club have improved they only need to win against the Catalans.

Almost a year ago Real Madrid had one of their biggest humiliations being defeated 5-0 by Barcelona. The unreachable domain of Barça could have lasted longer, but Mou’s Real Madrid improved and shortened distances between themselves and Barcelona. They won the cup final (played between the two teams) and put Guardiola’s team in trouble in both the league and the Champions. This year, the white team is playing even better, and now they have the chance to compete with Barcelona as equals and break the hegemony of the Catalans in the Spanish and European competitions.

Sahin, Altintop, Coentrao, Varane and Callejón. At first glance, these aren’t the players that a team needs to reach the top, or at least not the only ones. Nevertheless, Real Madrid already had good players who know each other and work well, so the new additions are just the finishing touch. Of course, good touches: Sahin joined Real to help Xabi Alonso and co. in the middle of the pitch; Altintop, the oldest of the 5 transfers, arrived to Madrid to play on the right side; Coentrao is a good left-back player (he was paid “just” €25 m.); Varane is very young player who joins Real to help in the defence line; and Callejón, who returns to Real Madrid after playing with Espanyol, this time seems to be ready for a top class team.

This year Real Madrid can break the domain of Barça, which will be even stronger with their new player, Cesc Fàbregas. Do you think Real will be able to overcome Guardiola’s team this season?
