The best players of La Liga! Chapter 2: Iker Casillas

Today, we will gossip about the best keeper in Real Madrid and Spain: Iker Casillas! For sure you know Iker because of his brilliant stops and because of his great behavior both in the pick and out of it, but today you will also discover his life and trajectory in football.

-          Chilhood and first contact with football

Iker Casillas was born in Mostoles (Madrid) on the 20th of May of 1981. Since he was a kid he stood as a keeper at his school and development. People who know Iker from way back say that he is polite, affectionate and modest. When he was just 9 he signed for Real Madrid, and from that moment his life changed completely before he reached the top.

-          His debut at the first team

When Iker was 15, he was called up for first time to play with Real Madrid’s first team at a Champions League match against Rosenborg, in Norway. Later, he made his debut in La Liga on the 12th of September of 1999 against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames stadium (the score was 2-2). That year Real Madrid won the Champions League and he became the youngest footballer who played and won it. The following year (1999-2000) Real won La Liga as well.

-          Real Madrid, Spanish National Team and present

After two seasons being Casillas Madrid’s main keeper, he lost his place in favour of Cesar Sanchez. However, Sanchez got injured in the Champions League’s final against Leverkusen, so Iker went on to the field and became the hero of the match. From that moment, nobody put him into question when talking about who should be Real Madrid’s keeper. After that final, he became (with Figo, Zidane, Beckham…) one of the ‘Galácticos’ of Real Madrid. They won few titles and Iker made his best to achieve them.

During the season 2007-2008 he won the ‘Zamora’ prize which recognized him as the best keeper in Spain. The following year he overcame Paco Buyo having played more matches with Real Madrid (more than 454).

The last title Casillas has won with Real Madrid is La Liga 2011-2012, with Jose Mourinho as coach.

With the Spanish National Team, Casillas is as important as he is with Real Madrid. He made his debut in 2000 against Sweden, and he is now the footballer who has played more matches with ‘La Roja’. Iker has achieved 1 World Cup and 2 Euro Cup with the team!

The best football is back, “La Roja” is back, the Euro is back!

The best football of Europe returns this Friday: it’s time for the Euro 2012! Poland and Ukraine are the countries that are going to hold Europe’s most important football tournament played by national teams. It will last about one month: the opening match will be played by Poland and Greece this Wednesday and the final will take place on the 1st of June.

One of the favourite countries to win the competition is Spain, who already won the last Euro and World Cup. “La Roja” is one of the best teams in Europe so they are candidates to win but they are not in the same good conditions as they were two or four years ago (when they won the Euro’08 and the World Cup’10).

Spain have a lot of the players that won two years ago in South Africa in their squad, but also  some of their very important players are injured. One of them is David Villa, who has been injured for five months. It seemed that he was going to be ready for the Euro but in the end he will not play it. Spain loose for this tournament one of their best 9’s ever, but Negredo, Pedro and Torres will be the team’s defenders.

Carles Puyol is one of the other players that will not play the Euro in Poland and Ukraine. He has suddenly been injured so Spain loose one of their best defenders. However, Vicente del Bosque’s team have a lot of qualified players that will fight for the title, so once more Spain are one of the favourites to win the title.

Besides Spain, there are more countries with good chances of winning the Euro. One of them is Germany, the team that is always a candidate to win, and even more so this year because they have some young promising stars that could gain them this year’s title. Another candidate to win in Poland and Ukraine is Holland, who “need” to win a title to recover from their defeat in the last World Cup final against Spain. The other possible winners are be England, France or Italy.

All is ready! Enjoy the EURO 2012!
