Everything is ready for the Joan Gamper Trophy which will take place tomorrow at the Camp Nou. The first part of the night will be the presentation of next year’s team in front of all their fans and the second part will be the match Barcelona vs Roma.

‘La Festa del Gamper’ (Gamper’s Party), as it is commonly known this trophy, will for sure be a colourful festival with fireworks, music performances and entertainment during the whole night.

Now let’s have a look to the history… The trophy is named Joan Gamper. Why?

FC Barcelona’s trophy is named after Joan Gamper, the club’s founder. Hans Gamper (known in Catalonia as ‘Joan’) was a Swiss who moved to Barcelona in 1899. That year, when football wasn’t popular yet in the Catalan capital, he founded a little team in Les Corts’ neighborhood, Foot-Ball Club Barcelona (years after he was also the president).

This old Barça team was made up of foreign players who, like Gamper, were living in Barcelona. Joan Gamper never thought the team he founded would get to the top. In fact, depression led him to suicide at just 52 and he was never able to fully enjoy watching FC Barcelona, the team he had created, play in official competitions.

¿Quieres ver a Neymar, Messi, Iniesta…? ¿Al flamante fichaje Bravo?… ¿Para qué pensártelo más?

We already know Barça’s rival in the Gamper Trophy: Sampdoria

FC Barcelona will play this year’s Trofeu Joan Gamper on Monday the 20th of August at the Camp Nou against Sampdoria. This season it has been 20 years since the Catalan team won their first European Cup against Sampdoria, so the best way for them to celebrate it is by inviting the Italian team to play at the Camp Nou.

The Trofeu Joan Gamper is not just a friendly match. It is a whole day of celebrations in which all kinds of club members and fans from all over the world come to the Camp Nou to see live the official presentation of the team in preparation for the new season. Because of this, the trophy is also known as ‘La Festa del Gamper’ (The Gamper Party).

However, this year the Gamper Trophy will be slightly different if the Spanish football clubs accept that La Liga begins on the 18th of August and not the following weekend. If this happens, the Gamper would be played two days after the first La Liga match for Barça and because of this the presentation of the new coach Tito Vilanova, the rest of the staff, and (perhaps) of new players would take place once the official season has already started.

The fact that this season it has been 20 years since the blaugranas won their first European Cup could make this Gamper Trophy special. The club’s directors are thinking about paying tribute to the heroes that won Barça that title in 1992.

There are some details of the ‘Festa del Gamper’ that are still to be confirmed, but what we know for sure are the friendly matches that Barça will play in July. Vilanova’s team will play against Hamburg in Germany on the 24th of July, and on the 28th in Tangier against a team formed by the best Morroccan players.
